Plastering is an important part of any construction project. It protects walls, improves durability, and gives a smooth finishing surface for painting or decoration. One of the most common questions in construction is how much cement and sand are required for plaster work. Calculating plaster materials manually can be confusing and time-consuming.
To make this process easier, you can use a Plaster Quantity Calculator. This tool quickly calculates the amount of cement and sand required for wall plaster based on the area, thickness, and mortar ratio.
In this guide, we will explain how plaster quantity is calculated, the formula used, and how a plaster calculator helps contractors, engineers, and builders estimate materials accurately.

Basic Formula for Plaster Quantity Calculation

Plaster quantity is calculated using the following formula:
Wet Volume of Plaster = Area × Thickness
Where:
Area = Wall area in square meters or square feet
Thickness = Plaster thickness in meters
However, since plaster contains air voids and wastage, the dry volume of mortar is considered.
Dry Volume = Wet Volume × 1.33
After calculating dry volume, the mortar ratio is applied to determine cement and sand quantities.

Example of Cement Plaster Calculation

Let’s understand plaster quantity calculation with an example.
Given Data
Wall Area = 10 m²
Plaster Thickness = 12 mm (0.012 m)
Mortar Ratio = 1:4

Step 1 – Calculate Wet Volume
Wet Volume = Area × Thickness
Wet Volume = 10 × 0.012
Wet Volume = 0.12 m³

Step 2 – Calculate Dry Volume
Dry Volume = Wet Volume × 1.33
Dry Volume = 0.12 × 1.33
Dry Volume = 0.1596 m³

Step 3 – Cement Quantity
Total ratio = 1 + 4 = 5
Cement Volume = (1/5) × 0.1596
Cement Volume = 0.0319 m³
1 cement bag = 0.035 m³
Cement Bags = 0.0319 / 0.035
Cement Bags ≈ 0.91 bags

Step 4 – Sand Quantity
Sand Volume = (4/5) × 0.1596
Sand Volume = 0.1277 m³
So the required materials are:
Cement ≈ 1 bag
Sand ≈ 0.128 m³
